As marine conservationists, the MWSRP believe that a relationship with the ocean fosters the will to protect it.

In 2017 the MWSRP designed and implemented the ‘Moodhu Kudhin’ programme. Translated from Dhivehi, this means ‘children of the sea’ and is a very exciting two-day practical and theoretical experience designed to get school pupils engaged with the work we do and foster their passion for the reefs and marine megafauna of the Maldives.

The key component of this programme is getting the children out onto and into the sea. Supervised by MWSRP staff, as well as teachers and parents, pupils are able to safely explore and see first-hand the complexity of the coral reefs that surround their home islands. They also learn first-hand what it takes to collect scientific data, which we always hope will plant the seeds of interest in a marine sciences career!

These on-water activities are supported by a series of lessons and presentations, carefully designed to explain what they are seeing first-hand and make relevant the very real effects human actions have on the reefs.
